Local training opportunities

The Swim for GT Bay and the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA, Y Triathlon, and Tri Again Fitness are partnering to provide a variety of training opportunities for locals who are interested in partcipating in the swim. 

Here's a run down:


Indoor Pool: Swim for Grand Traverse Bay Training organized by the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA

Dates: June 3- Aug 9

  • Monday + Wednesday + Friday: 12-1pm swim
  • Tuesday + Thursday: 5:30-6:30am swim
  • Tuesday + Thursday: 6:45-7:45pm swim

Location: Central Y (Civic Center's Easling Pool)
Cost: Free for Grand Traverse Bay YMCA members; cost TBD for non-members

July Dates & Times: Monday & Wednesdays, 7;45-8:45pm
August Dates & Times: 10:30-11:30 am AND 6:15-7:15pm.
Location: Twin Lakes Park, wetsuits are mandatory; a waiver will be signed before each swim
Cost: Free to Grand Traverse Bay YMCA members; $25 for non-members The open water swims are organized by Tri Again Fitness, and you MUST register through Tri Again Fitness; if no one is signed up for a swim training, the instructor will not go.


“Masters” means 18 years old and up. Ability levels vary. Swimmers are grouped by ability and experience for all workouts. There is a friendly, helpful and competitive spirit at all workouts. There are a number of group swims each week at YMCA Central (Civic Center) and the YMCA West on Silver Lake Rd. (More information at

Registered swimmers are encouraged to attend the full course preview on Saturday, July 20 at 8am at Greilickville Harbor Park. Attendees will swim the full 2 mile course under the guidance of Coach Tony. Wetsuits and safety floats are strongly encouraged. The course preview is free for registered swimmers.

Tony Venticinque has participated in more than 150 open water triathlons from Sprint distance up to and including 2 Ironman events (which included a 2.4 mile swim in the Gulf of Mexico!). He has been a Race Director, Safety Coordinator, or Swim Course Coordinator for over 50 triathlon events and has coached over 250 triathletes from beginner to pro. His goals are to share his knowledge and experience, help swimmers accomplish what they never thought possible, and keep them safe around water.  


COACH Kathy 

Kathy Coffin-Sheard is the Grand Traverse Masters Swimming Coach. She was an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at the University of Georgia, a Division 1 -12 time All-American, member of the United National Swimming team for 3 years and carried a 9th place world ranking in the 50 meter freestyle. Kathy’s goals are to connect with as many adult swimmers as possible, to work with diverse age ranges and abilities and to inspire adult swimmers to set and attain new goals.
