Local training opportunities

The Swim for GT Bay and the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA and Y Triathlon are partnering to provide a variety of training opportunities for locals who are interested in partcipating in the swim. 

Here's a run down:

SWIM FOR GRAND TRAVERSE BAY TRAINING

Dates: May 30th-Aug 15th
Location: Central Y (Civic Center)
Cost: $55

Choose (1):
1. Tues + Thurs: 5:30 am swim
2. Tues + Thurs: 6:30 pm swim
3. Mon + Wed: 12 pm swim

All packages include a weekly Friday 6 am swim at the Senior Center Beach at 801 E Front Street in Traverse City starting June 2. Wetsuits and safe buoys are strongly recommended for the open water swims.

Participants MUST be registered for the Swim for GT Bay to participate in this program. Receipt of race registration is required upon registration.

FREE FRIDAY OPEN WATER SWIMS

**Starting June 2 2017: Open water swims from Senior Center Beach 801 E Front St. Anyone can join. Wetsuits and safe buoys are strongly recommended for the open water swims.

The group is escorted by a certified life guard and at least one paddle board escort for visibility; however, swimmers are responsible for their own safety and participate at their own risk.

Swimmers will learn open water skills like cold water acclimation, pack swimming, drafting, sighting, breathing in choppy water, stroke efficiency, resting, strategies for defensive swimming and emergency preparedness.

MASTERS SWIMMING

“Masters” means 18 years old and up. Ability levels vary. Swimmers are grouped by ability and experience for all workouts. There is a friendly, helpful and competitive spirit at all workouts. There are a number of group swims each week at YMCA Central (Civic Center) and the YMCA West on Silver Lake Rd. (More information at GrandTraverseMasters.org)

Tony Venticinque has participated in more than 150 open water triathlons from Sprint distance up to and including 2 Ironman events (which included a 2.4 mile swim in the Gulf of Mexico!). He has been a Race Director, Safety Coordinator, or Swim Course Coordinator for over 50 triathlon events and has coached over 250 triathletes from beginner to pro. His goals are to share his knowledge and experience, help swimmers accomplish what they never thought possible, and keep them safe around water.  

 

COACH Kathy 

Kathy Coffin-Sheard is the Grand Traverse Masters Swimming Coach. She was an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at the University of Georgia, a Division 1 -12 time All-American, member of the United National Swimming team for 3 years and carried a 9th place world ranking in the 50 meter freestyle. Kathy’s goals are to connect with as many adult swimmers as possible, to work with diverse age ranges and abilities and to inspire adult swimmers to set and attain new goals.
