Swim Day Information

The Swim begins at Greilickville Harbor Park in Elmwood Township on M-22 in Greilickville and ends at Volleyball Beach in Traverse City.

Swimmers, paddlers  and volunteers are asked to park across the street of the Harbor Park at Brewery Creek (behind Subway). Paddlers can drop their equipment at the Harbor Park then park their vehicle. We will be providing a shuttle from the Brewery Creek parking lot to the Harbor Park.

Parking is available in downtown Traverse City in several locations. The after-party will be held at Volleyball Beach.

We will have a shuttle from the Brewery Creek parking lot to Greilickville Harbor Park in the early morning and then from Volleyball Beach back to Brewery Creek after the swim.

The Swim begins at 8 a.m., with check-in beginning at 7 a.m. and a mandatory safety briefing at 7:45 a.m. Depending on the number of swimmers there may be more than one start group, including one for unescorted, experienced open water swimmers and for those with support paddlers.

All swimmers must check in at the pavilion at Greilickville Harbor Park where they will receive their numbered swim cap (if they haven’t done so prior at packet pick up) and have their Swim number written on the backs of their hands by volunteers.

August temperatures in northern Michigan average a high in the mid to upper 70s, with lows in the high 50s to early 60s. Expect water temperature to be in the upper 60s to low 70s, depending on how warm of a summer we have. Click here for current temps.

Although the Swim is not a competitive or sanctioned event, timing services will be provided by Classic Race Management. Swimmers will have access to a website with timing results after the race.

At this time, we do not provide refreshments at the starting point (drinking fountains are available). There will be a pancake breakfast and beverages to help you regain your energy and rehydrate at Volleyball Beach following the swim.

Wet suits or technical suits are allowed, as well as other swimming gear. For those swimming competitively, we will have both wet suit and non-wet suit categories.

Flotation devices and equipment such as snorkels, fins and kickboards are allowed for those swimming non-competivitely. These swimmers will still receive timing results, but are not eligible for swim prizes (fundraising prizes still apply).

Gear Transportation

We will transport swimmers' and paddlers' gear from Greilickville Harbor Park to Volleyball Beach. Please make sure it's all in one bag and labelled with your name.

Swim Time

Swimmers have two hours from the start time to complete the Swim for Grand Traverse Bay. Swimmers remaining in the water after two hours will be assisted to shore.

Every effort will be made to hold the Swim on the date and time its scheduled. We will swim in rain or shine! In the event of inclement weather (lightning or serious storm) the event may be postponed the day of in hopes the weather will pass. However, if the bad weather does not pass and swimmer safety comes into question, the event will be cancelled. If that is the case, there will be no refunds, credits, or transfers. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made to this policy. When you register for this event, you agree to this weather policy.

In the event of an emergency during the Swim, safety boats on the water will be there to assist. Volunteers who are part of our non-motorized safety squad will be trained to notify the motorized safety boats, which can help swimmers in need during the Swim.

Public safety/emergency personnel will be available along the route and on the water, and at least one certified lifeguard will be on the water during the swim.
